Long before modern search engines existed, this Cambridge professor pioneered research in information retrieval and natural language processing. Her development of inverse document frequency (IDF) became a core foundation for how search engines rank results today.

A recipient of major honors from Association for Computing Machinery and the British Computer Society, she was not only a brilliant researcher but also a powerful advocate for equality in tech — famously stating: “Computing is too important to be left to men.”
