Wikipedia, Women and Notability

ACM-W Europe would like to see an increase in Wikipedia pages that highlight women in STEM. There is a new ACM-W Europe Wikipedia Working Group that has taken up a mission for sustainable submissions, including the formula for notability, develop a ‘notable women’ list, and submissions of many Wikipedia pages and present their work at womENcourage 2025. The workgroup welcomes all who would like to help in this mission and invites anyone interested in gaining new visibility for women in STEM to send an email to acm_w_europe_wikipedia@acm.org.

Introducing JUST ACM-W Student Chapter

This month, we are introducing the ACM-W Student Chapter at Jordan University of Science and Technology, officially established on August 19, 2024. The chapter is the first ACM-W Student Chapter in Jordan and brings together dedicated student volunteers from all majors offered at the university’s IT faculty. The chapter was built on the values of collaboration and support, fostering an environment where women can confidently explore their passions in technology and inspire each other to reach new heights. Together, they aim to enhance academic experiences through hands-on workshops, guest lectures, and networking events with industry professionals. Below, find their journey in their own words.

The event took place at the USIU-Africa School of Science and Technology and was fully sponsored by ACM Women. ACM Awards and Advanced Grades of Membership Deadlines

Each year ACM recognizes outstanding achievements of its members through awards that cover a spectrum of professional and technological areas and different stages of professional development.

To learn more about awards, we recommend the article by the ACM President Cherri M. Pancake, who dispels some common myths about ACM Awards and Honors in the Communications of the ACM, August 2019. One of the myths is that the ACM Awards never honour people working outside North America. Prof. Pancake writes that even though nothing would make ACM committees happier than to recognise the achievements of people from around the globe, there are very few nominations. Source: Dispelling Common Myths About ACM Awards and Honors.
