ACM Scholar Spotlights: Pedro Angélico

In this edition, we feature Pedro Angélico, a master’s student in Informatics and Computing Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto, whose fascination with technology’s diverse applications is driving his mission to use technology for social good and support inclusivity in the tech community.
My Passion for Using Technology for Social Good
I have been fascinated by technology’s diverse applications ever since I first learned about them. As a result, my desire to learn more about this area and apply technology to a better society has only increased! As I pursued my bachelor’s degree in Informatics and Computing Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto, my journey was truly remarkable. It fueled my enthusiasm for innovation and deepened my commitment to using technology to positively impact the community. Currently, I am enrolled in the master programme in the same field and institution, and I could not be more thrilled.
The Journey and Challenges in Technology
There are many different areas in the field, and each one presents a different opportunity to make a difference, ranging from building complex systems to developing innovative algorithms. Seeing the practical applicability of the knowledge I gain is one of the best parts of my study. The abilities I am learning can address numerous global issues, including healthcare and sustainability.
Like many others, I have faced periods of self-doubt. By analysing my work and identifying areas for improvement, I have learned to refocus and regain confidence. It is important to acknowledge that some elements are beyond our control and to concentrate on what can be addressed.
Insights from womENcourage
The programme offered a chance to connect with bright minds throughout the globe and aimed at concerns related to gender equality in the field of informatics. WomENcourage had a lasting influence on me by highlighting the significance of inclusivity and the value of diversity in technology.
From this experience, I learned that developing a technological product goes beyond just writing code. It involves considering the broader implications of technology, such as ensuring it does not discriminate and is accessible to all users.
Advice and Encouragement for Future Technologists
For anyone considering a career in technology, my advice is simple: remain curious and persistent. The tech industry is large and dynamic, and a curious mind will always find new areas to explore and innovate.
Furthermore, finding mentors and people who can guide you is crucial. Thanks to all my mentors, I have received valuable advice, inspiration, and opportunities. These relationships have been crucial in guiding me.
