Stories of Women in Computing Matter
Hi, I’m Toshna, a volunteer with ACM-W Europe, and this is something I’ve been thinking about recently.
As part of the ACM-W Europe community, I often find myself reflecting on the stories we choose to tell in computing, and the ones that are still missing. While March, marked by Women’s History Month, often brings these conversations into focus, the importance of sharing these stories does not end with the month.
Across the field, many women have made contributions that quietly shaped the technologies we rely on every day. Yet their names and journeys are not always as widely known as the systems or tools they helped build. Taking the time to share these stories is not just about looking back. It is about recognising the people behind the progress and ensuring their impact continues to be seen.
Looking Beyond the Headlines
The history of computing is often told through a handful of familiar figures. In reality, the field has always been shaped by a much broader community of researchers, engineers, educators, and innovators. Many women have played key roles in developing programming languages, designing systems, advancing research, and teaching future generations.
Revisiting these stories helps us see computing for what it truly is: a collaborative effort built over time by people with different perspectives, ideas, and experiences.
Why We Share These Stories
At ACM-W Europe, creating space for these voices is an important part of building a stronger community. Through initiatives like the Trailblazers in Computing blog series, we aim to highlight the people whose work has shaped the field and whose journeys continue to resonate today.
These stories are not just about recognition. They are about visibility. When students, researchers, and early-career professionals encounter a wider range of experiences in computing, it becomes easier to see a place for themselves within it.
Connecting Past and Present
Sharing these stories also reminds us that progress in computing is rarely immediate. The tools and systems we use today are the result of years of experimentation, collaboration, and persistence.
Understanding the people behind these developments gives us a deeper appreciation of how the field has evolved and how each generation contributes to its future.
A Community Effort
These stories belong to the broader computing community. By continuing to document and share them, we help build a more complete and inclusive picture of the field.
For us, this is part of an ongoing effort to recognise contributions, encourage dialogue, and support a community where more people feel connected to both the history and the future of computing.
Continuing the Conversation
Sharing these stories is not a one-time effort. It is something that grows with the community. Each story adds to a wider understanding of who has shaped computing and who continues to shape it today. As we move forward, continuing to highlight these journeys helps create a space where more voices are recognised, more experiences are valued, and more people feel they belong in computing.
If you have a story to share, whether it is your own journey or someone who has inspired you, we would love to hear it. These stories become even more meaningful when more voices are part of the conversation.
