ACM Scholar Spotlights: Andrea Belen Cretu Toma
Welcome to ACM Scholar Spotlights, a series where we shine a light on the inspiring paths of women in computing who received the 2024 ACM-W scholarship. Through their own words, we hear how they found their place in tech, what motivates them, and how they’re making an impact. These stories reflect not only technical achievement, but also courage, curiosity, and community.
In this blog, we feature Andrea Belen Cretu Toma, a fourth-year Computer Engineering student at Universitat Jaume. Andrea shares their journey into technology, their first experience at womENcourage, and the inspiration they gained to overcome challenges and support women in tech.
Introduction
Hello everyone! My name is Andrea Belen Cretu Toma, and I am in my fourth year of Computer Engineering at Universitat Jaume I. I chose this field because I have always enjoyed using computers and believed I could excel at programming. The support from my professors and family has been instrumental in my journey, as they have always believed in me and encouraged my pursuits.
My Path and Support System
Throughout my studies, my passion for design and mathematics has been incredibly valuable. I am particularly interested in software development and enjoy solving problems through logic. This drives me to create innovative programs with potential real-world impacts. I love programming and creating cool, innovative applications. It’s fulfilling to see my ideas come to life through code, and I am excited about the future potential of my work.
Opportunities and Challenges for Women in Technology
I believe women can significantly impact technology by focusing on innovative areas like neural networks and addressing specific women’s issues, such as reproductive health. There is vast potential in these underexplored areas.
Advice for Women Considering This Path
To any women thinking about computer engineering, don’t be afraid! Everyone starts from scratch, and although it might be challenging at first, with perseverance, you will excel. Initial difficulties are opportunities to learn and grow.
Current Projects and Overcoming Doubt
I am currently part of a research group developing an AI to identify facial expressions in photos. Despite moments of doubt and imposter syndrome, I’ve learned that with time and effort, I can overcome challenges. My studies have prepared me well, and I am confident that dedication leads to success.
Facing Challenges
One significant challenge has been the lack of female peers in my field, making it hard to find role models or female friends. However, womENcourage helped me connect with others in similar situations and foster meaningful conversations with my classmates.
First womENcourage Experience
This was my first womENcourage and in fact, my first ever conference. I loved seeing peers present workshops and participating in a hackathon for the first time. womENcourage inspired me to become a better engineer and connect with like-minded people.
Lessons Learned and Future Inspiration
One valuable takeaway was learning about biases, which is relevant to my work in AI and neural networks. I have become a huge fan of this conference and recommend it to all my friends in the field. I am particularly excited that next year’s womENcourage will be held in Romania, my home country.
In conclusion, I wholeheartedly recommend this experience to anyone interested in technology. womENcourage has inspired and empowered me, and I look forward to how it will continue to shape my career and others in the future.
Thank you for reading about my journey. I hope to see you at the next womENcourage!
