ACM Scholar Spotlights: Deniz Soylular

Welcome to ACM Scholar Spotlights, a series where we shine a light on the inspiring paths of women in computing who received the 2024 ACM-W scholarship. Through their own words, we hear how they found their place in tech, what motivates them, and how they’re making an impact. These stories reflect not only technical achievement, but also courage, curiosity, and community.

In this piece, we feature Deniz Soylular, a third-year Computer Science student at Koç University, ACM chapter chair, and aspiring app developer whose curiosity for AI and passion for community engagement shaped their first womENcourage experience.

About Me

I am Deniz Soylular, studying at Koç University as a third-year student. I am the ACM chapter chair at our university and currently trying to explore my field and, well, myself. I am interested in app development using Flutter. I founded a recipe-creating app that uses AI. I plan to publish it in the following month, so I was already motivated to learn more about artificial intelligence and the dangers it brings.

My womENcourage Experience

On the 26th of July, I attended womENcourage for the first time. From the first moments of the hackathon to the closing ceremony, the most memorable aspect has been the smiles. From current students to renowned professors, the event was full of support and warmth, encouraging you to share, learn, and create. Listening to an academic speech from a professional and having coffee with them 10 minutes later was inspiring.

As a computer science student myself, after connecting with professors in tech talks and with the sector in career fairs, I felt like a part of something bigger.

What Makes womENcourage Special

I first learned about this event thanks to my friends in the ACM chapter at our university. However, this event is bigger than just an “ACM-W meeting.” It was a greater gathering, where you can contribute regardless of your background. This blindness towards gender, race, or personal preferences is what we need to achieve great things as a community. For me, womENcourage presents an important stance on this matter. In womENcourage, you are valuable, and there is no “because.”

Reflections and Takeaways

Looking back at the past three days of the event, I know much more about computer science and artificial intelligence. More importantly, I know more about the people in the sector. I am better informed about the difficulties women face in the field. I am more motivated to take steps to help overcome inequalities.

I am more connected with other ACM student chapters (like our new buddy chapter!), and being part of this connection ACM-W created was an honor. I look forward to being an active member of this event in the future.
