womENcourage 2022, in Larnaka, Cyprus

In 2022, womENcourageTM invites the Arts to join our celebration! The theme of this year’s celebration is  “Drawing New Lines in Science”. This year’s ACM womENcourage 2022 recognises that both the Arts and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) share a focus on creative thinking, problem-solving and experiential, immersive learning. We are celebrating ways in which the Arts relate to STEM, often referred to as STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics). The venue for womENcourage 2022 will be the campus of the University of Central Lancashire, Cyprus (UCLan Cyprus). Find out more and take a virtual tour of the campus here.

Event Dates: 21-23 September 2022
Extended Abstracts (and optionally posters) due: 2 May 2022
Detailed Proposals due: 2 May 2022
Scholarship applications due: 9 May 2022
Registration Open: 30 May 2022

Per aspera ad astra¹- My journey to academia

  1. Per aspera ad astra is a popular Latin phrase meaning “through hardships to the stars”.

Each year we meet wonderful women at womENcourage™ celebrations. We ask womENcourage participants to tell their stories in blog posts. We start 2022 with  Sarune Savickaite,  a PhD candidate at the School of Psychology, University of Glasgow, funded by ESRC/SGSSS.  Sarune’s current research project is titled ‘Using VR technology to understand the inner world of autism’. Other research interests include depth perception and stereopsis, art and aesthetics, perception and cognition. Read Sarune’s inspiring journey to academia on our blog.

The best advice I could possibly give is – do not be afraid to ask. If there is a research project you would like to get involved with or an engagement activity you wish to initiate – ask! What is the worst thing that could happen?

I finally got a funded PhD position by sheer serendipity.  I was ready to throw in the towel hundreds of times. Every interview and every rejection chipped away at my confidence, but I always hoped. And although support and encouragement from friends and family are helpful, in the end, it is all about you. Never give up. But also prepare yourself for the alternatives. Place yourself in the dream job you wish to have, and then prepare plan A on how you will get there, and then plan B and all the way to plan Z. And once again adapt, re-evaluate and keep your goal in mind. Where there is a will, there is a way.

ACM-W Europe Social Media Highlights

Not on social media? Not a problem. In December 2021, our most popular post on Facebook celebrated Bara Buhnova, who was featured in Computerworld.cz magazine among the TOP personalities in tech in 2021 in the Czech Republic – there were four women featured this year and three of them took part at womENcourage 2021. We congratulate Sara Polak and Michaela Lhotková.

We can see you are excited about womENcouarage 2022, that was our top tweet on Twitter .

ACM Awards and Advanced Grades of Membership Deadlines

Each year ACM recognizes outstanding achievements of its members through awards that cover a spectrum of professional and technological areas and different stages of professional development.

To learn more about awards, we recommend the article by the ACM President Cherri M. Pancake, who dispels some common myths about ACM Awards and Honors in the Communications of the ACM, August 2019. One of the myths is that the ACM Awards never honour people working outside North America. Prof. Pancake writes that even though nothing would make ACM committees happier than to recognise the achievements of people from around the globe, there are very few nominations. Source: Dispelling Common Myths About ACM Awards and Honors.
