ACM – W Celebrations of Women in Computing

ACM Celebration of Women in Computing: Women’s Marathon 2025

For the fourth time, the women of Kiel University present their work on March, 7th 2025 – one day before international women’s day. From students to professors, from projects to research, we are proud to present an exciting event about the work and studies of the women of Kiel University. While in 2022, only the Faculty of Engineering participated with its three institutes, now women of more faculties and thus of more institutes are going to show what they work on.

Mainly, this day of talks is meant to present all the various areas women at Kiel University work in, but it is also there to remind everyone that the situation for women at universities is still not optimal, e.g., to few women start to study, a higher-than-average drop-out rate, and the glass ceiling. Thus, all the speakers not only want to enthuse the audience about their work but also want to encourage pupils to start studies, students to keep on with their studies, and PhD-students and PostDocs to aim higher. Alongside the talks, there will also be time for questions and networking. Even in the university, one never knows if there isn’t the chance of a collaboration between people who never thought that their fields of experience overlap.

Online (Zoom)

While ACM-W is widely known for its supportive network within research education, did you know we have a growing global community of Professional Chapters for women in tech? In “An inside look of ACM-W Professional Chapters,” we are excited to feature the newly formed Professionals Chapter Committee. During the insightful discussion, the panelists will discuss the purpose and importance of Professional Chapters, their experiences as chapter members, and their vision to take the initiative forward. Most importantly, we will highlight how professional women can benefit from this unique opportunity to foster local leadership and global connections.

The Celebrating Technology Leaders webinar series aims to highlight the stories of women in computing who are successfully leading in the technology industry. These one-hour conversations aim to provide career coaching and leadership advice to those who are in the early career stage. ACM Awards and Advanced Grades of Membership Deadlines

Each year ACM recognizes outstanding achievements of its members through awards that cover a spectrum of professional and technological areas and different stages of professional development.

To learn more about awards, we recommend the article by the ACM President Cherri M. Pancake, who dispels some common myths about ACM Awards and Honors in the Communications of the ACM, August 2019. One of the myths is that the ACM Awards never honour people working outside North America. Prof. Pancake writes that even though nothing would make ACM committees happier than to recognise the achievements of people from around the globe, there are very few nominations. Source: Dispelling Common Myths About ACM Awards and Honors.
