ACM-W Europe Organisational Changes
As we embrace the change, it’s time to celebrate the remarkable journey we have shared with Rukiye Altin, the ACM-W Europe Chair from July 2022 to June 2024. Rukiye’s visionary leadership and unwavering commitment have been the cornerstone of our community’s growth and success. She has done an amazing job leading the ACM-W Europe Executive Committee and serving the ACM-W Europe community. As Rukiye transitions to a new and exciting role within ACM Women, which will be unveiled shortly, we are excited to share with you the news about exciting organisational changes in ACM-W Europe, effective July 2024.
Firstly, we are thrilled to announce that our previous Vice Chair, Dorota Filipczuk, will ascend to the role of ACM-W Europe Chair. Dorota served as the ACM-W Europe Vice Chair in 2022-2024. In addition, she has been part of the womENcourage Steering Committee since 2019 and was a member of the womENcourage Organising Committee in 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2022.
Secondly, the responsibilities of the ACM-W Europe Vice Chair will be taken over by Alexandra Dediu. In 2022-2024, Alexandra served on the ACM-W Europe Executive Committee as the Communications Chair. She was also part of the ACM-W Europe Communications Working Group from 2018 until now.
Finally, from July 2024, ACM-W Europe will welcome two new working groups: the Wikipedia Project that will be led by Bev Bachmayer and the Hackathon Committee led by Taras Panchenko. Both Bev and Taras served on the womENcourage Steering Committee in the 2022-2024 term.
Congratulations to all the new leaders! Stay tuned for more updates.

If you would like to be part of this team, apply here.
- Wikipedia Project: This group will contribute to the recognition and representation of women’s achievements in our field by increasing the visibility of European women in computing on Wikipedia. As this is a new initiative, as a first step, the Working Group will work on a workshop proposal for womENcourage 2025 relevant to this topic. If you would like to join this Working Group, apply here.
- Hackathon Committee: ACM Women Europe is excited about the prospect of offering more events for the members and engaging with those members who may be unable to travel to our annual event, womENcourage. Therefore, we are looking for volunteers who can organise ACM-W Europe Hackathons, starting from a virtual event as a first milestone. If you’re ready to take on this challenge, apply here.

Student Chapter Buddies
ACM-W has started a campaign and is encouraging all ACM-W chapters to partner with other ACM-W chapters from the same/different state, country, or region to become a Buddy. The partnerships can be created to achieve some common goal, be it Academic, Social, Professional, or Service. The ACM-W Buddy System aims to inspire collaborations between the ACM-W chapters across the world, overcoming the barrier of distance and time!
This month we would like to share with you two new buddy chapters ACM-W Koc University, Turkey and UPV ACM-W Student Chapter, Spain.
Blog: Diversity Heroes – Virginia Grande
We had the pleasure to speak to VIrginia Grande who shared their journey with ACM-W Europe and an insight on diversity and inclusion in computing.
“My first experience with ACM was as part of a student chapter, which led me to take part in an event for chapter officers in Europe. From there I joined the ACM Council of European Chapter Leaders (CECL). It was at a CECL meeting co-located with an ACM-W Europe one that Reyyan approached me and immediately convinced me of how important the work of ACM-W Europe is.”

ACM Europe Council Seasonal Schools
ACM Europe Seasonal Schools focus on educating researchers on a general or specialized topic over the duration of one or two weeks and involve a small number of students. They provide a separate instrument for serving the computing community, achieving different goals from those of typical conferences. Usually, all students stay together in the same place, the venue of the school lectures, and ideally this is the case for all their instructors as well. This co-existence of everyone during lectures as well as social activities is important as it facilitates learning, the formation of groups that may continue to interact beyond the duration of the school and connects upcoming researchers and other computing professionals with ACM.

ACM Awards and Advanced Grades of Membership Deadlines
Each year ACM recognizes outstanding achievements of its members through awards that cover a spectrum of professional and technological areas and different stages of professional development.
To learn more about awards, we recommend the article by the ACM President Cherri M. Pancake, who dispels some common myths about ACM Awards and Honors in the Communications of the ACM, August 2019. One of the myths is that the ACM Awards never honour people working outside North America. Prof. Pancake writes that even though nothing would make ACM committees happier than to recognise the achievements of people from around the globe, there are very few nominations. Call for ACM Senior Member Nominations
The Senior Member advanced grade of membership recognizes ACM members with at least 10 years of professional experience and 5 years of continuous ACM Professional membership. Nominations are accepted on a quarterly basis. The next deadline for nominations is September 3, 2023.
