Introducing the London ACM-W Chapter

(Left to right)London ACM-W Chair Ferheen Ayaz, Vice-Chair Marjahan Begum and Treasurer Mirela Reljan-Delaney

The newly launched London ACM-W Chapter marks an exciting step forward in advancing inclusion and equity in computing. Spearheaded by Women++ members from City St. George’s, University of London, this initiative is set to empower and connect women in tech through collaboration, mentorship, and research-driven cultural change. We are proud to announce the launch of the London ACM-W Chapter, a vibrant and inclusive community led by members of Women++ society from the Department of Computer Science at City St. George’s, University of London, focusing on building confidence through mentorship, addressing systemic inequalities, and promoting research-informed cultural change in computing education. The chapter plans to organise speaker events, technical workshops, and school outreach activities while collaborating closely with ACM-W Europe, and has already hosted its first successful event on 2nd June called “Speed Dating Workshop for Women++ Collaboration” to foster meaningful connections among participants. London ACM-W is grateful to all founding members who made this initiative possible – Ferheen Ayaz, Marjahan Begum, Mirela Reljan-Delaney, Dina Mostafa, Elahe Kani-Zabihi, Sara Heitlinger, Cristina Gacek, Golnaz Badkobeh, Aisha Junejo and Cigdem Sengul – and to the ACM-W leadership team for their guidance and support throughout the establishment process.

Blog series – ACM-W Scholarship Spotlights

Welcome to ACM Scholar Spotlights, a series where we shine a light on the inspiring paths of women in computing who received the 2024 ACM-W scholarship. Through their own words, we hear how they found their place in tech, what motivates them, and how they’re making an impact. These stories reflect not only technical achievement, but also courage, curiosity, and community.

Crihana Denisa Cristina, a computer science student from Romania whose passion for responsible computing, cybersecurity, and AI is driving her commitment to create a more equitable and secure digital future.

Maitane Gómez, a recent Computer Science graduate whose research on sex differences in Parkinson’s disease and passion for data ethics shaped her inspiring experience at the womENcourage conference

Ingenito Mafalda, a dedicated research fellow at the University of Salerno whose passion for computer science, commitment to gender equality, and impactful work in human-computer interaction and AI are driving meaningful change in the STEM community.

Francesca Perillo, a Ph.D. student at the University of Salerno. whose resilience, passion for Human-Computer Interaction, and commitment to social impact are shaping a meaningful career at the intersection of technology and well-being.

27th Informatica Feminale and 17th Ingenieurinnen-Sommeruni

The registration for the International Summer Universities for Women in Computing and Engineering is open. Deadline 31 July.

28th Informatica Feminale here.

17th Ingenieurinnen-Sommeruni here.

Both the summer universities will take place on the campus of Bremen University (in presence) from 20th August to 4th September 2025.

The summer universities are directed at women students of all disciplines, levels and from different types of institutions of higher education, women professionals and all women interested in computing, engineering, technology, architecture and interdisciplinary course topics. Our special focus is on sustainability and social impacts of technologies.

Women lecturers from science and practice will hold classes in small groups. Participants can take part in and earn credit points for classes, workshops and seminars, lasting one or several days. Some 60 courses will be offered. Courses will be taught in English and German.

There are specific courses for student beginners as well as for advanced students and for practitioners who wish to get further education on a current academic level. The women networks Ingenieurinnen-Sommeruni and Informatica Feminale are places to exchange about technical and social developments, which we meet in our every-day life and which are designed by ourselves as technical experts.

In addition, field trips to research institutes at Bremen University and to regional companies as well as networking events will be organised. Several companies and institutions will give talks on job opportunities during the three weeks.

Students and unemployed are charged a one-time fee of 40 Euro for a participation of three weeks. Courses of both the summer universities can be combined. Employed women pay a fee of 40 Euro a day, if possible.

During the entire summer university, childcare is provided for free.

Please bring your students’, colleagues’ and employees’ attention to this offer.

Thank you very much for supporting us!

ACM Awards and Advanced Grades of Membership Deadlines

Each year ACM recognizes outstanding achievements of its members through awards that cover a spectrum of professional and technological areas and different stages of professional development.

To learn more about awards, we recommend the article by the ACM President Cherri M. Pancake, who dispels some common myths about ACM Awards and Honors in the Communications of the ACM, August 2019. One of the myths is that the ACM Awards never honour people working outside North America. Prof. Pancake writes that even though nothing would make ACM committees happier than to recognise the achievements of people from around the globe, there are very few nominations. Source: Dispelling Common Myths About ACM Awards and Honors.

Call for ACM Senior Member Nominations

The Senior Member advanced grade of membership recognizes ACM members with at least 10 years of professional experience and 5 years of continuous ACM Professional membership. Nominations are accepted on a quarterly basis. The next deadline for nominations is September 3, 2023.
