Telling our stores – Ana Kalemi

Each year we meet incredible women at womENcourage™ celebrations. We ask womENcourage participants to tell their stories in blog posts. We continue 2023 with Ana Kalemi, who obtained a  degree in Computer Science at the University of New York in Tirana while working as a Software Engineer. She attended womENcourage 2023 in Trondheim and is interested in AI and research.

About me

I am a Software Engineer and a Computer Scientist with a keen interest in Artificial Intelligence and research. Ever since I can remember, the puzzle-like nature of mathematics and algorithms intrigued me, pushing me to think deeper and solve the enigma. At the same time, there was this undeniable love towards art and creativity. Now, as I look at my journey, it feels like I am standing on the bridge where these passions meet.

I would define myself as an individual in a state of continual change, always exploring my next interest and deeply immersing myself in it. The vast cosmos of Computer Science and STEM is full of stars to be discovered. With each aspect, there’s always something new to learn, over and over. This endless exploration is what captivates me. As for the future, quoting Aurelius, “Dwell on the beauty of life. Watch the stars, and see yourself running with them.”

From Childhood to Academia and Early Career

Growing up in the picturesque small city of Korçë, Albania, has had its own charm. In a setting where nature meets tradition, life there offered the serenity of a small town. I was blessed to be raised in a warm and loving family of four, where support and affection were ever-present. From early on, my brother and I frequently bonded over computer games, playing side by side. As time went on, our playful sessions evolved into a broader fascination with technology. Beyond mere fun, the computer screen resembled a window into a world of endless opportunities.

My growing passion for technology led me to pursue a degree in Computer Science at the University of New York in Tirana. Juggling academics with a demanding role as a Software Engineer was by no means easy, yet the challenge only fueled my determination. One cherished accomplishment during this time was maintaining a full merit-based scholarship at my university, a testament to my dedication and hard work. As my academic journey neared its end, I initiated a pioneering research project. My bachelor thesis, titled “Process Optimization using Process Mining: A case study for Albania,” aimed to introduce Albania to the topic of Process Mining and contribute to our country’s technological landscape. As my knowledge expands, I’ve recently developed a keen interest in Artificial Intelligence. Seeing its rising significance recently, I am enthusiastic about what the future will bring.

About WomENcourage

Attending the womENcourage 10th Conference in Trondheim, Norway was a memorable experience for me. Thanks to my professor, Marjana Prifti-Skenduli and her invaluable guidance, I was inspired to participate in this opportunity. The conference was immensely beneficial. It served as a networking hub, connecting me with like-minded individuals. There, collaborations flourished and ideas were exchanged throughout the program, from the hackathon to workshops and poster presentations.

I was fortunate to volunteer and assist the organizing team, ensuring everything ran smoothly for the participants. Additionally, I had the chance to present as a speaker during the poster session. The experience was rewarding, and I truly cherished the connections I made with the people I met.

To those considering attending in the future, I wholeheartedly recommend it. In fact, keep an eye out for the upcoming conference in Madrid 2024 – it promises to be yet another enriching experience.

Ad Astra!
