Indo European ACM Celebration of Women in Computing: A Decade Celebration
The first Indo European ACM Celebration of Women in Computing: A Decade Celebration was virtually held on June 22, 2023. ACM-W Europe and ACM-W India are both having their 10th year anniversary and within this event, many great experiences and memories were shared with the participants. ACM-W Global Chair Ruth Lennon welcomed us with her encouraging speech. ACM-W India Chair Heena Timani and ACM-W Europe Chair Rukiye Altin shared the list of activities done in their regions.

ACM-W India Treasurer Rutvi Shah chaired the first panel about chapter experiences. We had great guests from both regions who talked about their experiences. ACM Women Trondheim Vice Chair Anna Szlavi, who is also a postdoctoral researcher at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), shared her experiences with being part of the chapter. She also talked about womENcourageTM as NTNU is going to host 2023 event in September. Elif Şen, who is ACM Bilkent (Turkey) Chair, showed how an ACM chapter can inspire women in other fields as well with the activities they have been running at Bilkent University. Dr. Geetanjali Kale, who is Chair of ACM-W Pune Professional Chapter (India), inspired us with the amazing works they have been doing. Her words “Collaboration is a key to success” encouraged all of us to have more collaborative works. Shreya Sharma, Chair of the ACM-W chapter at ABESEC (India) and Shagun Kesarwani, Secretary of the ACM-W chapter at ABESEC (India), told us about their journey through ACM-W. We are all inspired by the works that are run by ACM-W chapters a lot.

The second panel of the event was chaired by Dorota Filipczuk who is ACM-W Europe Vice Chair. The guests of our panel were the founders of both regions. Reyyan Ayfer, founder of ACM-W Europe and Arati Dixit, founder of ACM-W India, told us how the idea of starting regional ACM-W became alive.
Thank you to everyone who was with us during this special event. We hope to have another collaborative event with ACM-W India soon.
ACM-W Chapters Buddy System
Our first ACM-W Europe Chapters Buddies!
ACM-W has started a new campaign in December 2022 and is encouraging all ACM-W chapters to partner with other ACM-W chapters from the same/different state, country, or region to become a Buddy. The partnerships can be created to achieve some common goal, be it Academic, Social, Professional, or Service. The ACM-W Buddy System aims to inspire collaborations between the ACM-W chapters across the world, overcoming the barrier of distance and time!
We are so happy to announce that ACM-W Europe chapters started that collaboration. The Trondheim Chapter of the ACM-W and The Greek Chapter of the ACM-W are buddies to work on academic projects together. We can’t wait to see the work of our two chapters in the future.

More information about the Buddy project can be found here.

Blog Series
Telling our stories by Mia Bjørndal
Each year we meet incredible women at womENcourage™ celebrations. We ask womENcourage participants to tell their stories in blog posts. We continue 2023 with Mia Bjørndal, who is a bachelor’s degree student in informatics at NTNU in Trondheim, Norway and is fully invested in the gender equality problem.
“I really understood that ACM WomENcourage is to celebrate women in Computer Science, and to encourage women to stay and continue their way in it. This is a really important theme and a really important celebration.”

womENcourage past chair – organising the event online
We are acknowledging the milestone of 10 years of womENcourage with a series of blogs from past chairs who organised this event successfully so far. This month we have Araz Yusubov, who was chair of womENcourage 2020.
“The 2020 event was the first online womENcourage, the only one so far that lasted 4 days and had a male chair. […] womENcourage is a great platform with a positive, inclusive, inspirational traditions. You may want to consider starting with local celebrations, as we did some years ago. This can be a great occasion for starting a local ACM chapter or strengthening and existing one.”

The Walter Benjamin Programme enables researchers in the postdoctoral training phase to independently conduct their own research project at a location of their choice. The project can be carried out at a research institution in Germany or abroad, with the host institution providing support for the project.
The Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation) is now expanding its existing funding measures for academics who have fled their home country by opening up the Walter Benjamin Programme with the aim of enabling this target group to become integrated into the German research system. In the current situation, this practical support measure for refugee researchers from all regions of the world is also an expression of solidarity with researchers from Ukraine as well as persecuted researchers from Russia.
Deadlines: Proposals may be submitted at any time.
ACM Awards and Advanced Grades of Membership Deadlines
Each year ACM recognizes outstanding achievements of its members through awards that cover a spectrum of professional and technological areas and different stages of professional development.
To learn more about awards, we recommend the article by the ACM President Cherri M. Pancake, who dispels some common myths about ACM Awards and Honors in the Communications of the ACM, August 2019. One of the myths is that the ACM Awards never honour people working outside North America. Prof. Pancake writes that even though nothing would make ACM committees happier than to recognise the achievements of people from around the globe, there are very few nominations.
