Meet ACM Fellow – Pierangela Samarati

In the early days of 2022, ACM has recognised 71 computer scientists as Fellows.  The ACM Fellows program recognises the top 1% of ACM members for their outstanding accomplishments in computing and information technology or outstanding service to ACM and the larger computing community. Fellows are nominated by their peers, with nominations reviewed by a distinguished selection committee.

3 European women are on the list for their contributions this year!

  1. Judith Gal-Ezer – research and implementation in CS education
  2. Paola Inverardi – software architecture
  3. Pierangela Samarati –  data security and privacy

Pierangela SamaratiWe are featuring Prof. Pierangela Samarati on our blog this month. Pierangela Samarati is a full professor of Computer Science at the University of Milano, Italy, where she leads the Security Privacy and Data Protection Laboratory. She has also been a Computer Scientist in the Computer Science Laboratory at SRI, CA (USA). In addition, she has been a visiting researcher at the Computer Science Department of Stanford University, CA (USA), and the Center for Secure Information Systems, George Mason University, VA (USA).

“[Academia] is part of my life and what I am. Despite the energy and efforts you put in, it does not feel like work since it is what you like to do. I like care, attention, and rigour. My guiding philosophy has always been to try to do my best and make a difference in everything I am doing. What makes me happy is when I am able to transfer the same passion and enthusiasm to others and to the young generations.”

Heartfelt congratulations to Professor Samarati!

womENcourage 2022, in Larnaka, Cyprus

In 2022, womENcourageTM invites the Arts to join our celebration! The theme of this year’s celebration is  “Drawing New Lines in Science”. This year’s ACM womENcourage 2022 recognises that both the Arts and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) share a focus on creative thinking, problem-solving and experiential, immersive learning. We are celebrating ways in which the Arts relate to STEM, often referred to as STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics). The venue for womENcourage 2022 will be the campus of the University of Central Lancashire, Cyprus (UCLan Cyprus). Find out more and take a virtual tour of the campus here.

Blog – Telling Our Stories: My First Hackathon by Lena Stempfle

One of the most appreciated experiences by our participants in womENcourageTM is the hackathon.  If you want to know what it feels like, read our blog from Lena Stempfle, who is a PhD candidate at the Data Science and AI division at Chalmers University of Technology (Sweden). Lena’s work is focused on machine learning for healthcare, decision-making and causality.  womENcourage was her first hackathon experience. Lena says:

“Before attending my first hackathon within the womENcourage Conference, I mainly thought it is only about coding. However, it is much more than that and has been an amazing experience.”

ACM-W Europe Social Media Highlights

Not on social media? Not a problem. In January 2022, our most popular post on Facebook was about our blog post – Telling Our Stories – Per aspera ad astra¹- My journey to academia by Sarune Savickaite, a PhD candidate at the School of Psychology, University of Glasgow, funded by ESRC/SGSSS.  A great read, find it here.

Our top tweet on Twitter was about the Heidelberg Laureate Forum applications! We hope you all made the deadline for the applications.

ACM Awards and Advanced Grades of Membership Deadlines

Each year ACM recognizes outstanding achievements of its members through awards that cover a spectrum of professional and technological areas and different stages of professional development.

To learn more about awards, we recommend the article by the ACM President Cherri M. Pancake, who dispels some common myths about ACM Awards and Honors in the Communications of the ACM, August 2019. One of the myths is that the ACM Awards never honour people working outside North America. Prof. Pancake writes that even though nothing would make ACM committees happier than to recognise the achievements of people from around the globe, there are very few nominations. Source: Dispelling Common Myths About ACM Awards and Honors.
