This month, we feature Alessia Simone, currently pursuing her pursuing a master’s degree in Data Science and Business Informatics at the University of Pisa.

In this blog post, she shares her experience at womENcourage™ 2023, her skills and common challenges women face in tech.

Introduction

My career journey in computing has been a thrilling adventure, filled with challenges, triumphs, and the promise of a bright future. In this article, I will share my experiences, the reasons behind my choice of technology, the challenges I’ve faced, my hopes for the future, and advice for aspiring women in the field.

I have a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science and I’m currently pursuing a master’s degree in Data Science and Business Informatics at the University of Pisa. My fascination with technology began with a love for problem-solving: I’ve always been captivated by the idea of creating innovative solutions to real-world problems. I’m currently working as a part-time Web Developer while I’m studying, but I’m planning to become a Data Scientist and work with AI in the future. My ultimate goal is to become an entrepreneur and open my own company.

Skills and Personal Growth

Throughout my career journey, adaptability, critical thinking, and effective communication have been invaluable. The ability to learn continuously and stay updated with technological advancements is also crucial in this fast-paced field. Anyway, the most enjoyable aspect of my studies is the opportunity to work on projects that challenge me and provide a platform for creative problem-solving. Each project is a chance to learn and grow.

Challenges for Women in Technology

One of the biggest challenges for women in technology is the gender disparity and biases that still exist in the industry. However, the opportunities for women to excel and make their mark are vast, and organizations are becoming more inclusive and supportive. My advice to women considering a career in technology is to believe in themselves, be persistent, and seek mentorship. It’s crucial to acknowledge moments of self-doubt but not let them deter you from pursuing your dreams. Imposter syndrome is a common challenge in tech, but I’ve learned to recognize it as a natural part of personal growth. By seeking support from peers and mentors, I have been able to confront and conquer these moments of doubt.

The womENcourage Experience

This was my second womENcourage, and it was an eye-opening experience. The most enjoyable aspect was the incredible sense of community and the wisdom shared by accomplished women in technology. womENcourage inspired me by showcasing the amazing achievements of women in tech and emphasizing the importance of women supporting women. It has fueled my determination to succeed. womENcourage sessions provided insights into various aspects of technology, from ethics to innovation. These learnings will undoubtedly benefit my career progression.

For those who are planning to attend womENcourage, I would recommend actively participating in sessions, networking with fellow attendees, and absorbing the wisdom and inspiration that this program offers. It’s an opportunity that can transform your tech journey.
