Telling our stories – Gyda Sæter

Each year, we have the privilege of meeting inspiring women through ACM-W events. We invite participants to share their experiences in blog posts, highlighting their journeys, challenges, and achievements.

This month, we feature Gyda Sæter, currently pursuing a master’s degree in informatics at the University of Oslo.

In this blog post, she shares her journey into computing, her master’s research on gender biases in software engineering teamwork, and how attending womENcourage has inspired her to advocate for gender equality in tech.

About Me

Hi, I’m Gyda, a 23-year-old currently pursuing a master’s degree in informatics at the University of Oslo.

My journey into the world of computing wasn’t something that came naturally to me. During my formative years, I didn’t have a knack for computers, and my childhood dreams revolved around pursuits traditionally associated with girls. It was only by a stroke of serendipity that I stumbled upon programming and, thanks to the encouragement of my IT teacher, decided to dive into the world of technology.

However, I must admit that I hesitated when choosing this path. The male dominance in the field of technology made me skeptical, but I am forever grateful that I chose to overcome those doubts. Consequently, when it came time to select a topic for my master’s thesis, I knew I wanted to dig into the realm of gender issues.

My Master’s Thesis

My current research revolves around the impact of gender and gender distribution on the quality of teamwork within software engineering. I’m investigating the biases that permeate teamwork in academia, particularly within student teams. It’s becoming increasingly clear to me that there is a lack of awareness surrounding gender biases in the field of computer science. It is crucial that we acknowledge these biases and engage in meaningful conversations about them.

So, to all my fellow female colleagues in the software industry: don’t hesitate to speak up about the gender biases you encounter and experience.

womENcourage: A Boost for My Thesis

Attending the womENcourage event has contributed to shaping my master’s thesis. It not only served as a source of motivation but also provided me with invaluable insights, experiences, and connections.

Participating in the poster session was a game-changer. The feedback and advice I received were invaluable, and it has provided me with a clearer direction for my thesis. I wholeheartedly recommend all attendees create posters about their theses. It’s a fantastic way to gain constructive feedback and find inspiration for your future work.

In conclusion, womENcourage has been a pivotal experience, and I encourage all aspiring women in tech to attend and take full advantage of the opportunities it offers.
